Why Mindfulness Is a Superpower: An Animation


You may have heard this word mindfulness,
it’s become something of a buzzphrase of late. I’m going to give you one simple serviceable
definition which is this: mindfulness is the ability to know what’s happening in your head
at any given moment without getting carried away by it. Imagine how useful this could
be. Just as an example, youre driving down the road, and someone cuts you off in traffic.
How do you normally react? I think most of us normally react by having a thought, which
is, “I’m pissed”. And then what happens next? You immediately, habitually, reflexively inhabit
that thought. You actually become pissed! There’s no buffer between the stimulus and
your reaction. With just a little bit of mindfulness in that same situation, you might notice,
“my chest is buzzing, my ears are turning red, I’m having a starburst of self-righteous
thoughts, I’m getting angry.” But you don’t necessarily have to act on it and chase that
person down the road screaming at them with your kids in the back of your car thinking
you’ve gone nuts. Now you might be thinking, “don’t I need to get angry sometimes? Aren’t
I justified?” I would say yes, but probably not as much as you think. The proposition
here is not that you should be rendered by mindfulness into some lifeless, nonjudgmental
blob. The proposition is that you should learn how to respond wisely to things that happen
to you, rather than just reacting blindly. And that, my friends, is a superpower. How
do you get it? The way to get it is through meditation. I believe that meditation and
mindfulness are the next big public health revolution. In the 1940s if you told someone
you were going running they would’ve said “Who’s chasing you?” but then what happened
next? The scientists swooped in, they showed that physical exercise is really good for
you, and now all of us do it, and if we don’t, we feel guilty about it. And that’s where
I think we’re headed with mindfulness and meditation. It’s going to join the pantheon
of no brainers like brushing your teeth, eating well and taking the meds your doctor prescribed
for you. Let me just close by saying mindfulness is not going to solve all your problems, it’s
not going to render your life a nonstop of parade of unicorns and rainbows. Nonetheless
this is a superpower, and one that is accessible by you, immediately.

    additionally worth looking into is the Hindu practice of Ubuntu (observer state of the arrival & then source of one's thoughts & emotion) & Confirmation Biases to ensure your not justifying your own errors of thought + behaviour by blaming everyone else's.

    A great introductory easy read book for getting into mindfulness healthily without conditioned bias's is The art of Thinking Clearly by Rolf Dobelli

    wish someone had recommended me these types of content early in life which is why just typed all this incase helps someone else

  6. I try to meditate but there is weird feeling that some force is trying to impede me from doing so. How could that be? Why would God want me to be less mindful? The moment I reach that point of deep thought and mindfulness the world around me seems to time a perfect noise or itch or pain to kick me out of my place. Why? You could argue that this force is trying to help me by kicking me out of my comfort zone, but aha! Why take all that time to punish me when they could offer me a solution, or a job or at least allow me to keep my job or apartment without continuously being kicked out on the street for the tiniest infraction?

  14. You dont necessarily have to meditate to learn mindfulness and be mindful, just start practicing the observation of thoughts and emotions as they arise and before you act in every day life.

  15. i disagree and believe mindfulness is actually mindlessness. Just as the Ying Yang goes there must be a balance between the two, negativity can offer alot of self reflection and constructive criticism. We live in a very narcissistic world where "mindfulness" can do more harm than good, when you consider the hard truth to face that we are all addicted to short term pleasures and rewards you realize that maybe it isnt good to focus on solely the present and the things that make us feel good and that you need negative reflection to change the things you hate about yourself that you know deep down need to change. Simply giving into the world is NOT a power its giving up, it being a sheep! Focusing on the good more than the bad is not how you master life. I believe this "mindfulness" is being used to further push the masses into impulsive short term thinking. Controlling your emotions when you're mad in a traffic situation is not mindfulness its simply self control and intelligence. Were being further molded into product consuming cattle!

  16. Is there a way to remove the "pissed". We would love to use this as an introduction to high school students about mindfulness; but would rather have "ticked off" or some other less inappropriate word. It is great; but are wondering about broadcasting it to students.

  17. Mindfulness should be taught in Schools as part of health carriculum (misspelled). Imagine kids harnessing the skill to be mindful in their day-to-day… Less anger, less violence, less need to "fit in" to the status quo and cliques, less attachment to things, more self confidence, more humbility, more kindness, more focus, more inner peace.

  18. I had to watch this for school but actually really liked it. I started meditation guided by youtube hypnosis videos (some of them are bad, I know, but some of them are life changing! The Michael Sealey ones without the rain/storms are fantastic) and I swear it's changed so much about how I approach feeling anxious and depressed. It's an amazing life tool to practice. Great video! The animation was really cool too and I'd probably watch more content with this character/voice.

    This is a matter of too many good things at once!

    1 awesome musician 

    2 (as cheesy as it sounds..  and fortunately as rich) legitimate imperial japanese heritage

    3 Very wise government run by clinton surrounding it (needing a japanese flower to get talking on this)

    4 beautiful unique people who are not all related directly to government but all have generally liberal views

    basically this is like someone looking at montgomery county

    saying if anything happens to this family its bad.

    im like downloading japanese girls and chilling with cool people its a big breakthrough

    on top of that its formation, i have discrete but frankly non 100% hideable protection not from my self from guards. 

    it looks rich and thats the context of it.. basically its saying no matter have much it may be discordant to whatever else i do its needed and luckily its a sign of everlasting wealth and stability in both countries. 

    this is an age of spies and this happening just shows gusto in the right direction because its being depicted as under constant challenge. 

    therefore the more very conservative signs i show of being protected and imperial the better. 

    sometimes you let the personality go and just say safe soft and protected. and this is whats attracting ppl.. and blah blah blah.. lol its just good hard to explain.. imagine being the princess of japan lol.. and they want to protect it. i figure it may die down a bit after a while but right now its like a spy story and its too wierd so basicallt ill take it as a princess because from what i see plainly its saying im singlehandedly holding this up otherwise as the usa.. if i say im protected by elite police suddenly it becomes the cia is a lot smarter and im just aware of the news even though all i was saying was of course right. its a breach of their policy to npt help blah blah.blah of course i could technically deny help i dont though .. n yea chilled with shelby

    simple enough for a kid to understand

  21. I always try to meditate but I don't really kn ow how and I don't think its working because I always get angry at the smallest things. 🙁 HELP

  22. For anyone who practices this method and it works for you, I have a question. Could this be described as like a greater form of patience? Like, is it just better patience or something to help make you more patient? Not sure if I asked that clearly, but could someone elaborate a bit?

  23. I would not say "amazing videos". I find this type of anthropomorphism absolutely stupid. have you seen a rat brushing its teeth? Having it working on its mindfulness-building strategy?
    If people making these stupid animated characters cannot create human drawing, they should go back to class! Even if the message can be interesting, this just puts me off and I find the entire video at the lowest level. Bad!

  24. I am stuck on mindfully taking medications recommended by a doctor who is influenced by BIG PHARMA? Why is this here in this video. It is so out of place it looks like a paid advertisement from the pharma industry.

  25. so in the end it means becoming a blob yes, they want to control you. don't react if they suppress you or stomp on you, by mindful and shut it, keep quiet so you won't be a problem.
