I am a speech-language-pathologist And if you have a child in the Autism spectrum this video is made for you. not My goal today is to show you way and materials that you Can use today not only to help your child understand the world around them better, but also to initiate and start some communication strategies that you have been probably so eagerly waiting for. For the last ten years I have been not only working as a speech-pathologist but also also creating creating resources, but I think the most important Aspect that what makes me so interested about autism is that my son is also in the Autism spectrum My goal today is to choose a specific topic and to try to get you informed about a tool that really has shown To make a significant impact in the lives of children with autism. I am talking about the use of Symbol support. But first let me talk about what symbol support is. Symbol support or visual support Is any form of visuals that help us navigate the world better. It can help us navigate the world better, or communicate. For example: Think of the restroom sign Are you thinking about this? I bet that symbol Came to you mind. Think about when you are ready to stop At a stop sign. It is another symbol that popped into your mind. Now, communication Is way beyond stop signs and bathroom sign The research has shown that Children with Autism significantly benefit from the use of these visuals. Not only for Understanding the world but also for communicating. So, what professionals have done is used these various visual support tools to allow the autist child to communicate in a way that they prefer; which is using visual support using picture symbols. Sometimes they will use these visuals to help them set up A schedule. We all know that children with Autism do struggle With making sure that their schedule is set. That they know where they are going next. That they know What they re gonna do throughout the day. Communication is way more complex than a stop sign and a bathroom sign tons of different words and different meaning, so children do need tons of different visual support to represent all those different meanings and throughout the decades special educators have used these various visuals support As a way to support learning. So I will give some examples from some of my friends who are creating different activities with their students. Both special education teachers speech therapists, they use these various forms of visual support to create schedules, calendars communication boards and tons of other activities. So, how Are they finding all these images? So if you want to start creating your own schedule for your own child There are several different visual support systems in the market. I have developed a visual support system called Smarty Symbols. Smarty Symbols contains 22,000 thousand Symbols that were specifically designed for learning and also for the child with a disability. They are able to express their wants and needs using Expressive. So, if they want to eat avocado today… They are actually able to express that without having to use their own voice, they use the iPad’s voice, using Picture symbols , think the stop sign and bathroom signs, but much bigger! Words that actually represent every day activities, like eating and all their needs in the device.
