Graphic Design: The Design of Communication

Graphic Design to me isdefinitely the design ofcommunication. Ya know, usuallydesign is more business driven. So it’s not necessarilyemotional in the way that a fineartist is. There’s definitelysome kind of brief or projectthat at the end there’s anecessary solution. Graphicdesigners are visuallyorganizing space withtype and image.Oakland’s Graphic Design facultyhas worked in the field so theyhave professional experience umand they also teach you thecritical theory behind design.Conceptual thinking is valuablein any type of design or artmaking because that’s what givesyou some kind of context orinterest to the work. Graphicdesign or any type of work thatdeals with that it’s not justabout making things beautiful,it’s about making them function. So you have to be able to thinkconceptually to understand whyyou’re making decisions.Graphic design spans across alot of mediums. I’ve had a webdesign class where we werelearning to code. I’ve had amotions graphics class where wewere working within AfterEffects to create film titlesequences and I’ve also had adesign illustration class wherewe studied the processof artists. You’re getting a broad educationso you have art history courseswhere you’re able to look at artand analyze them and then youcan come into the graphic designclassroom and you get to look atthe work of your peers and yourown and do that same kind ofthinking process.Class critics are the mostimportant part of graphic designclass. It’s what I look forwardto and it helps you to be abetter designer in the end. Itreally helps you in thelong run.Design is really a collaborativeprocess. Design doesn’t justhave to work for you, it has towork for everybody.Outside of what you do teaching, part of your responsibility isto be professional and do yourown research so everyone has aspecific thing they’reinterested in um and so itvaries person to person but Ithink that that’s the greatthing about OU is that if youare interested in a variety oftopics there is usually afaculty member that can talk youthrough that.Throughout the design program, you’re kinda learning thefundamentals along with shapingyour own style and yourown process. Our goal at the end of the dayis to help you figure out howyou’re going to use this degreewhen you leave and havingstudent involvement in kindaforming the curriculum obviouslygives you a feeling ofcommunity here.
