Como eu fiz graphic novel “Tina – Respeito” [parte 1]

[How I made my latest comic “Tina Respect”] So, after a long time recording these videos and NOT being avle to share this with you guys now I finally CAN! This is the first sketch I did of Tina, the main character. Just after I was invited to write this comic, I couldn’t keep her out of my mind so here it is. The first draft. I worked on Photoshop making some different options of teaser picture, for the comic, And we had a favorite at first, but since it was the same image idea of the last scene of the story, [This one] we decided to change the teaser to another idea. And after I sketch some options this one was the winner. I had don some different color pallets for us to choose, using photoshop also, And this was the drawing we liked more. And so for me to finish it with watercolor, I had to go through a lot of failed tests, Like this one, that didn’t work out, this other one, this other, until this one that turned out the way I planned. So after some early sketches and ideas, I started working on the story. I like to highlight the text with two different colors like that, each color representing one page of the comic. And then having this done I go to the computer, in this case I worked half on the computer, half on the ipad pro. And here you can se some blue prints I made, and they make it easier for me to imagine the scenes, and angle of the background. And it also prevents continuity mistakes, like putting a door in one side in a panel and then on the other side in another panel… I don’t know, it helps me. So here I made a blue print of the newspaper office, where she works and her apartment. Which is a two bedroom, if you notice, so it’s a very nice place specially for a big city. And after writing the story, and determining the right text to each page, I start to sketch a storyboard. And it’s like this, look. You can barely understand it, no I actually can’t figure it out anymore, but then I still could. Then having this done, I add the text in their place, to have an idea of where the speech bubbles will be. To finally draw a more finished and detailed sketch. Which takes me a looong time to do. And these ones I’m showing you are not my finest… Sooo, after the all the sketches are ready, and after making some color tests too, I print it all. In this case I printed it all in A4 size paper. While I was working on a A3 size watercolor paper, which means I worke on double pages each time. The paper I used for this comic was the 1005 cotton, Moulin du Roy Satiné, 300g hot pressed watercolor paper. which is a very soft paper, with no texture that helps me when I add some colored pencils later. So I stick my two A4 prints together using a clear tape, and transfer the sketch to the watercolor paper, using a light table, I think the images are very self explanatory… So I painted this page… didn’t like it at all… and… I also painted … painted this one and didn’t like it at all. This one too… didn’t turned out good. You know, I waisted a lot of good paper… I’m very nervous. Today I have new plans! And like always, I’m a person who insists! I have hope in this life! So last night I was on my ipad, trying to find some new ways, I looked at my own drawings, trying to find some inspiration on my own work! haha Because when I look at someone else’s work, I end up becoming more frustrated than anything else. Cause there are so many more talented people out there. And then I look at my work and think it SUCKS! So I try NOT to get inspiration on the artists I follow, that much. So what did I do? I went through my instagram, to check my own work, and try to search within my own things to find out which style I tried already that makes more sense to me, that I like more. And I saw some old illustrations I did, I don’t know, some of the drawings I’m doing lately are not making me too happy, and now I think I’m gonna take a step back, and try out a style I was working on a while ago, which I think suits me better… I think. Ok? Sooo…. So, that’s it. And, LOOK the birdy! Ohhh… So yesterday I was washing my palettes and the doors were open, and one bird rested right there on the balcony!! It was magical. Whatever, The only thing I know is that’s what I’m gonna do! Follow this kinda different style, I DON’T WANNA KNOW ABOUT IT, IT’S GONNA WORK OUT TODAY! Today i’m gonna finish two pages. Double pages. And other things I have to do… OK! Stay strong. Fighting! I put all my watercolors together, [I mixed some english with portuguese here…>___
